Super Scary Games to Play This Halloween Season

Super Scary Games, Sorted by the Night You Actually Have

Twenty-two days to Halloween. And here’s the thing nobody accounts for in the usual ranked lists: the scariest game in the world is useless to you on a Tuesday when you’ve got ninety minutes and a headache.

Horror is the genre most sensitive to circumstance. A three-hour psychological gut-punch played alone at 1am lands completely differently from the same game in a brightly lit room with someone watching over your shoulder. A co-op scavenging game that’s genuinely terrifying with four friends is just tedious solo.

So this isn’t a ranking. It’s a planner. Work out what kind of evening you’ve got, then pick accordingly.

Good news if you’re reading this now – October 2026 has been unusually generous. Three horror games launched yesterday alone, two more arrive before the 31st, and almost every live-service horror game on the market is mid-event right now with dated rewards you can still catch.

The October 2026 Release Calendar of Super Scary Games

Game Date Platforms Shape of It
Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival Oct 8 PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 First-person action horror, 8-12 hours
Silver Pines Oct 8 PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, Switch 2 2.5D metroidvania survival horror
Invokyr Oct 8 PC, Early Access Up to six players, supernatural board game
Valor Mortis Oct 13 PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S First-person soulslike, around 20 hours
Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy Oct 27 PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 Series finale, Akira Yamaoka soundtrack

That October 8 cluster is genuinely remarkable – three very different horror games on one Thursday. If you only have money for one, the rest of this article should help you work out which.

One Evening, Alone, Door Locked

The sweet spot for pure dread is the three-hour game. Long enough to build, short enough that you finish it in one sitting and go to bed properly rattled.

Mouthwashing is the one I’d press into anyone’s hands first. Psychological horror about the crew of a stranded space freighter, told through unreliable perspectives, with no traditional combat at all. Three hours. Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam, and two years after release it’s still the game people cite when they want to prove horror doesn’t need monsters.

Detention runs about the same length and does something braver. Set in 1960s Taiwan under martial law, it builds its horror out of local mythology and political terror in equal measure. Overwhelmingly Positive, and the 2019 film adaptation tells you how much it landed.

Stories Untold is the oddest recommendation here and the one that tends to stick longest. Four experimental episodes built around text adventures, puzzles and 1980s technology, from the team that later made Observation. About three hours. Worth noting that studio – formerly No Code, now Screen Burn Interactive – just released Silent Hill: Townfall last month, so you can trace a straight line between the two.

Flesh Made Fear takes the opposite approach: late-90s survival horror with fixed cameras and tank controls, deliberately. Pick Natalie or Jack and your health, inventory and parts of the story change. Six hours, Very Positive on Steam, and it came out on Halloween last year, which is the correct day for a game like that.

Super Scary Games

A few notes on getting the most from a short one:

  • Play it in a single sitting. These games are paced as films, not seasons.
  • Headphones, not speakers – the sound design in all four is doing most of the work.
  • Don’t look anything up mid-playthrough, because the discoveries are the content.
  • Accept that three hours is a full experience, not a demo at a reduced price.

Super Scary Games for a Group and a Voice Channel

Different genre entirely. Co-op horror isn’t about dread, it’s about panic and laughter, and right now almost all of it is mid-Halloween-event.

Phasmophobia is the obvious pick, and the timing is perfect. Up to four players, available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and VR with crossplay, and its Crimson Eye event is live from October 8 to November 1.

The event’s genuinely substantial. Blood Moon weather makes ghosts harder, you hunt Blood Moon totems for points, and eight maps are featured – 6 Tanglewood Drive, 42 Edgefield Road, Grafton Farmhouse, 13 Willow Street, Bleasdale Farmhouse, Point Hope on standard only, Camp Woodwind and Nell’s Diner. Rewards include a seasonal tee, the Beholder ID Card and Badge set, the Blood Moon charm and an upgradeable trophy, and if you already own the trophy from a previous year you keep upgrading the same one.

Three dated extras worth diarising: the Twitch drop runs until 11:59pm BST on October 15, double XP runs October 15 to 22, and the Ghost Hunts 4 Hearts charity collaboration with the American Heart Association runs October 26 to November 1.

Lethal Company has no Halloween event, which is almost funny given how much of its DNA now runs through the genre. It turns three on October 23. Up to four players, Steam only, still Early Access, still the best proximity-chat comedy of terror available.

Dead by Daylight brings back Haunted by Daylight, its long-running Halloween event – four survivors against one killer, across PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch with crossplay.

Hunt: Showdown 1896 is in the middle of Blood Testament Chapter 2, live since October 6, with All Hallow’s Cleave still to come. Solos, duos or trios, and the PvPvE tension of hunting monsters while another team hunts you is its own distinct flavour of stress.

GTFO is the serious option. Four players, Steam only, finished rather than live-service, and the most genuinely intense co-op horror on the market. No event, no seasonal cosmetics, just four people whispering in a dark room trying not to wake anything.

Invokyr, out yesterday, is the new entrant – up to six players navigating a supernatural board game in an abandoned 1970s house, with dice that carry hidden advantages or drawbacks. Early Access on PC, so temper expectations, but six-player horror is rare enough to be worth a look.

Game Players Event Status Right Now
Phasmophobia Up to 4 Crimson Eye, Oct 8 – Nov 1
Dead by Daylight 4v1 Haunted by Daylight returning
Hunt: Showdown 1896 1-3 Blood Testament Ch. 2 live since Oct 6
Lethal Company Up to 4 No event; third anniversary Oct 23
GTFO 4 No event, complete game
Invokyr Up to 6 Launched Oct 8, Early Access

Picking between them is mostly a question of what your group is like. Phasmophobia and Lethal Company suit people who want to laugh as much as scream. GTFO is for groups who can actually follow a plan. Dead by Daylight and Hunt suit the competitive ones.

A Whole Weekend

Eight to fourteen hours. Enough for a proper arc, finishable across a Saturday and Sunday.

Silent Hill: Townfall landed on September 24 and sits in interesting territory – strong critical reception overall, with reviewers praising atmosphere while flagging that stealth dominates to the point of occasional tedium. First-person, set in the Scottish coastal town of St. Amelia in 1996, roughly 10 to 14 hours. Worth knowing before you start: it has five endings governed by a hidden score, so if you care about the ending you get, read up first.

Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival is the big-swing release of the month and the most divided. Eight to twelve hours of first-person action horror, Doug Bradley back as Pinhead, and launch reviews ranging from 9/10 down to 4.5/10. Metacritic currently sits at 69 on PS5 and 74 on both PC and Xbox.

What the split comes down to: critics largely agree the atmosphere, visual design, sound, and franchise respect are excellent, and largely agree the gameplay design is frustrating with recurring technical problems. If you love Hellraiser, you’ll probably forgive it. If you’re coming for the mechanics, wait for patches.

Look Outside is the one more people should know about. A turn-based survival horror RPG set in an apartment building where looking out of the window causes you to transform. About fourteen hours, Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam, and a premise that commits properly.

The Cat Lady is fourteen years old and still one of the most affecting psychological horror games ever made. Eight hours, Very Positive, and genuinely not for everyone – it deals with depression and suicide directly rather than as set dressing.

The Long Haul

If you want October to be a project rather than an evening.

Valor Mortis arrives October 13 – a first-person soulslike where you play William, a soldier from Napoleon’s army resurrected into a plague-ravaged alternate 19th century. Around twenty hours, from One More Level, who have form in this space.

Pathologic 2 is the deep end. Twenty-eight hours of open-world horror in which you’re a doctor trying to treat patients during a plague that’s going to beat you. Very Positive on Steam, but it’s famously punishing and not in a fashionable soulslike way – it’s punishing about time, supplies and failure.

Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy closes out the month on October 27 and closes out the series. Susan searching a Mount Etna estate for her kidnapped daughter, with Akira Yamaoka – Silent Hill’s composer – on the soundtrack. Runtime hasn’t been announced.

Super Scary Games Worth Waiting On

A short honest section, because “buy everything” is bad advice.

  • Hellraiser: Revival has real technical problems alongside its atmosphere. A patch cycle would help it considerably.
  • Invokyr is Early Access with no price announced at the time of writing – fine if you want to be early, worth waiting if you don’t.
  • Remothered has no runtime or price confirmed yet, so judgement should wait until the 27th.
  • Anything with a “Mixed” Steam rating on launch week usually improves or doesn’t within a month; October is short and your time isn’t.

The Practical Bit: Making Any of These Scarier

Setup matters more for horror than for any other genre, and most people get it wrong.

  • Play at night, obviously, but more specifically play with no light behind your screen – glare kills contrast and contrast is where horror lives.
  • Headphones every time. Positional audio is the whole genre’s load-bearing wall.
  • Turn the music up and the voice down on any game that separates them, because scores do the dread and dialogue breaks it.
  • Don’t stream your first playthrough. Performing a reaction and having one are different activities.
  • One game at a time. Horror fatigue is real, and the fourth scary game in a week isn’t scary at all.

That last one is the honest reason I’ve structured this by occasion rather than as a top twenty. Playing five of these in October will make all five worse. Pick two and let them land.

FAQ

What’s the scariest short horror game right now?

Mouthwashing, at around three hours, with no combat and an unreliable narrator doing all the damage.

What’s the best co-op horror game this Halloween?

Phasmophobia, mostly because its Crimson Eye event is live from October 8 to November 1 with eight featured maps and a full reward track.

Is Hellraiser: Revival worth buying?

If you love the franchise, probably. Reviews range from 9/10 to 4.5/10, with Metacritic at 69 on PS5 and 74 on PC and Xbox, and the criticism focuses on gameplay and technical issues rather than atmosphere.

What horror games came out in October 2026?

Hellraiser: Revival, Silver Pines and Invokyr on October 8, Valor Mortis on October 13, and Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy on October 27.

Which horror game has the longest runtime?

Pathologic 2 at around 28 hours, with Valor Mortis at roughly 20.

Does Lethal Company have a Halloween event?

No, but it turns three on October 23.

What should I play if I’ve only got one evening?

Mouthwashing, Detention or Stories Untold – all roughly three hours and all designed to be finished in one sitting.

Pick Two, Not Ten

Every October the same thing happens. A dozen lists appear, each with twenty games on it, and everybody ends up buying four things and finishing none of them by November.

The games above aren’t ranked because ranking them is pointless – Pathologic 2 and Lethal Company aren’t competing for the same evening, and Mouthwashing and Hunt: Showdown barely belong in the same conversation. What they share is that they’re all genuinely good at frightening people, and they’re all available right now.

So be honest about your October. If you’ve got one free night, that’s Mouthwashing. If you’ve got a group and a voice channel, Phasmophobia’s event runs until November 1, and it’s the best it’s been. If you’ve got three weeks and real appetite, Pathologic 2 is still waiting, and it will still beat you.

And if you just want to watch Pinhead be magnificent in a game that doesn’t entirely work – that option’s there too. It’s October. Make bad decisions.

P.S. If this saved you from buying four horror games and finishing none, pass it on via X, Reddit or whichever group chat is already arguing about who’s hosting the Phasmophobia session – small writing teams move by word of mouth and nothing else. Bookmark it too, since two more releases land before the 31st and event dates shift, and we revise this page rather than filing a fresh one. And if creative or commercial collaboration brought you here, write to the YaninaGames team directly – we answer faster than anything in the Labyrinth.
